Nine new paper collages on 24”x30” RagMat

I spent most of the past two years cutting out the thousands of individual pieces that made up the collages in this show while listening to news stories, podcasts, and videos about resettlement, AI, climate change, the war in Ukraine, and the American working class.

Macroscopia is a word I (kind of) made up to describe the overwhelming feeling of attempting to see the world from multiple points of view simultaneously.

The individual pieces I found myself drawn to in creating these collages were recontextualizations of historical images of American labor industries including textile patterns, railroad schematics, and the human hand. I juxtaposed these fragments among images of vegetation, sea life, and other biological anatomy.

Despite the clash occurring between the analog, the digital, the mechanical, and the organic, I tried to find a certain current between them all. A commonality. Some way of trying to be present, absorbing it all, and still attempting to conjure it into something jagged and chaotic, but beautiful, ultimately, for trying.
